In Rancho Cucamonga, two bicyclists were killed by a suspected drunk driver

On Tuesday night, two bicyclists were struck and killed in Rancho Cucamonga by a suspected drunk driver.

San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies apprehended the suspect, Robert Gubany, 23, of Fontana.

A 41-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman from Upland were identified as the victims. Their true identities have yet to be revealed.

Around 8:20 p.m., police responded to a crash involving two bicyclists and a sedan near Foothill Boulevard and Etiwanda Avenue.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene when deputies arrived. The male victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The suspect was driving east on Foothill Boulevard when he moved into the right-hand bicycle lane to pass traffic, according to investigators.

According to deputies, the two victims were riding westbound in the bicycle lane, against the flow of traffic, when the driver collided with them.

The suspect drove away from the scene and was involved in another crash later that night.

 

According to authorities, no one was injured in the crash.

Authorities apprehended the suspect later and noted he “displayed signs and symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol.”

He was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving while intoxicated.

The fatal incident is still being investigated.
